Sales Engineering Academic Programs

Rather than treating sales engineering as a stand-alone business track, Mt. SAC builds this A.S. around a full engineering applications degree plus two dedicated technical sales courses: Foundations of Technical Sales and Technical Sales Strategies. That structure gives the program a stronger technical base than many introductory sales pathways while still preparing students for roles in sales engineering, technical sales, and technical customer service. It sits within the college’s Natural Sciences Division and is designed with industry employment in mind.

This minor is built into LSU’s construction management pathway and adds training in accounting, economics, management, marketing, communication, and either engineering economy or finance. It also includes physics and an upper-level construction management course, so the curriculum stays tied to technical and project-based work rather than shifting entirely into business. Students must earn at least a C in every required course and maintain a 2.0 GPA across the minor coursework, and the minor is formally declared through the College of Engineering Dean’s Office.

This minor gives technically oriented students a business layer that stays closely tied to industrial practice. Alongside management, marketing, and supply chain coursework, students study personal selling and choose an upper-level course in project management, logistics systems, or purchasing and materials management. That mix makes the program relevant not only to sales engineering, but also to procurement, technical marketing, and manufacturing representation. A grade of C or better is required in all minor courses, and at least six credits must be distinct from the student’s major.

This certificate is built around more than sales technique alone. Mt. SAC combines its two technical sales courses with training in speaking, writing, quantitative reasoning, and engineering-focused critical thinking, so students develop both communication skills and technical fluency. That structure makes the program suitable for students preparing to explain products, support customers, and work across technical and commercial teams. It is a relatively short pathway, but the curriculum is broader than a basic introductory sales certificate.

Texas A&M’s Technical Sales minor is a tightly defined six-course sequence built within Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution, which gives it a distinctly industrial and channel-oriented focus. Beyond Sales Engineering and a technical sales seminar, students study industrial distribution, B2B marketing, industrial sales force development, and either manufacturer-distributor relations or distributor information systems. The result is a curriculum centered not just on selling, but on how technical products move through business markets, partner networks, and commercial operations.

UF’s Sales Engineering minor is designed as a structured complement to an engineering major rather than a stand-alone sales track. The curriculum combines strategic selling with marketing, accounting or finance, communication training, and an engineering economics or cost-analysis course, so students build commercial skills without leaving a technical framework. The program also includes a Sales Engineer Seminar and requires a minimum 2.8 combined GPA. Notably, it is limited to students in engineering degree programs, with computer science students excluded.

Iowa State’s Engineering Sales minor is housed in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering and is designed specifically for engineering students pursuing business-to-business technical sales. Beyond core sales and marketing courses, it includes Entrepreneurial Product Engineering and an engineering economics option, so the curriculum ties selling to product thinking and financial analysis. The stated outcomes are notably practical: students work on ROI and payback analysis, client value analysis, sales process management, negotiation strategy, and written and verbal sales presentations.

Purdue Northwest’s Sales Engineering minor blends advanced selling coursework with upper-level engineering study rather than separating business and technical training. Students take Professional Selling and Advanced Selling, then pair them with engineering economics/project management or senior design courses from civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering. One notable feature is the option to substitute an internship in professional selling for Sales Management, adding a practical route through the minor. The course sequence is also somewhat structured, with key sales classes offered in specific terms.

Designed for engineering students exploring sales engineering and other client-facing technical roles, the program adds structured business training to a technical education. Its five-course curriculum covers marketing, technical selling, sales process and pipeline management, networking and prospecting, and consumer behavior. Together, these subjects help students understand how technical products are positioned, sold, and supported in real market settings. The minor is not available to students majoring in business and technical management, keeping it focused on non-business technical disciplines.

Purdue’s Supply Chain Engineering Technology Minor gives students a supporting skill set in supply chain operations and supply chain technologies. The program covers areas such as software, e-business technologies, visibility and productivity tools, and process advances including Six Sigma and Lean. It is available to Purdue students in four-year baccalaureate programs and can support career paths in logistics, purchasing, product management, supply chain management, and sales engineering.
